Fireworks At the Finish as Stark Wins at Angell Park
Sun Prairie, WI (July 2nd, 2023) - Kyle Stark lit up the night as he picked up his first feature win of the season with The Advanced Fastening Supply Badger Midgets. Stark swapped spots back and forth with Brandon Waelti for the win after starting eighth in the feature.
A season high 36 cars filled the pits as a cancellation of the MARA race in Illinois and Independence Day looming, meant the biggest car count of the season. Drivers such as Chase Cabre, Zach Daum, and Charlie Kunz made their debuts with the series as regulars Adam Taylor, Kurt Mayhew, and Mike Stroik all prepared to go to battle.
A single car qualifying session sponsored by Five-One Motorsports saw Kyle Stark top the board with a 16.264. Adam Taylor followed in second as Todd Kluever, Daltyn England, and Lamont Critchett rounded out the top five.
Madison Extinguisher Service Last Chance Qualifier was first on track as Stroik picked up the win followed by Jake Goeglein and Trey Weishoff. AutoMeter Heat 1 saw Brandon Waelti win with Eric Blumer and Ronnie Gardner rounding out the top three. Simpson Race Products and VMS Rod Ends Heat 2 was won by Taylor with Parker Jones and Cabre trailing him at the finish. Behlings Heat 3 finished with Derek Doerr in first, Cody Weisensel second, and Stark third.
High Performance Lubricants B-Main locked seven drivers into the feature with Tommy Colburn and Brian Peterson starting from the front row. Critchett won the B-Main as Tommy Colburn, Matt Rechek, Miles Doherty, Aaron Muhle, Stroik, and Kunz all raced their way into the feature.
The Advanced Fastening Supply Badger Midgets A-Main rolled off for their 25 lap feature event with the #3W of Brandon Waelti and #51 of Zach Boden pacing the field. Waelti took advantage of the better start and took off with the lead as a sixth starting Todd Kluever moved into second. A battle for third between Doerr and Taylor was quickly ended as Kluever slowed out of turn two and Taylor, with nowhere to go, got into Kluever rolling Taylor. Kluever would pull into the work area as well as Doerr ending their nights prematurely. Waelti led from the restart with Stark and Boden behind him. The only other yellow came out on lap eight as the #41 of Parker Jones came to a stop down the back straightaway. The same top three as the previous restart led them back to green and the war for the lead began. Stark made the first move, sliding by Waelti for the lead on lap fourteen. Waelti made the most of the lapped traffic and worked past Stark to regain the lead. Stark used Waelti’s tricks against him on lap twenty-one as he used lapped cars to shoot past a trapped Waelti. On the final lap, Waelti sent one last lunge at Stark to get alongside him going down the front straightaway. Stark crossed the line first with Waelti 0.085 behind and Boden in third. England and Daum rounded out the top five. “That was badass” Stark said in victory lane as a sea of crew and family overtook him.
The Advanced Fastening Supply Badger Midgets will make their northernmost trip up to Thunder Hill Speedway in Menomonie, WI on July 15th, and then back to Angell Park Speedway on July 16th.
