“McDermand Steals Plymouth Victory Late”

August 1, 2021, Plymouth, WI-- The Badger Midgets kicked off a doubleheader weekend at the Plymouth dirt track on Saturday night. 25 Midgets roared to life over the echoes of the "Sheboygan Stomp".

The event started out with Indiana’s Adam Taylor taking home the Schoenfeld Headers Qualifying quick time honors. In the Madison Extinguisher Service Non-Qualifier race, WingLESS sprint racer Charlie Spoonmore jumped behind the wheel of Denny Smith’s #10 machine and piloted to a victory. Todd Kluever starting from the last row jumped into a big lead and never looked back during Auto Meter heat race #1. Defending Plymouth winner Jack Routson takes home Simpson Race Products heat #2.

Ken Hanson and Routson led the field to green for the night’s feature event. Routson jumped from the outside pole to take a commanding lead early. Hanson fought diligently to hold second from the middle lane with Kyle Stark and Andy Baugh working on him. After several laps, Stark was finally able to climb to second bringing a host of others with him but his stay would be short-lived as Chase McDermand slid his #40 machine into second moments later. Kluever, Cody Weisensel, and Zach Boden entered into the fight. As the field sorted out second, Routson was checked out into another zip code and beginning to catch the tail end of the field. With 10 laps remaining he held a comfortable straight away advantage over the battle for second, but Routson was not in a hurry to lay cars down a lap. Playing it safe with the tail end of the field proved to be costly as that pack of cars fighting for second erased his giant lead in a matter of laps. When McDermand hustled Routson down, he quickly worked the middle groove forcing a pick-off maneuver to secure the lead away from Routson with just three laps to go. The caution would fly a lap later setting up a green-white-checker shootout, McDermand had a great launch to get away by four car lengths never letting the field get a chance en route to his series-high fifth win of the season. Routson hung on for second over Stark, Weisensel, and Kluever.
