Clarke holds off Stratton charge at 'Prairie
 |
Sun Prairie, Wis., Aug. 20- Australia's Adam Clarke captured the Governor's Cup 50-lap Badger Midget Series feature Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway. The victory was his third career series feature victory and came in his fifth start of the season.
Polesitter Aaron Fiscus jumped into the lead at the start, with positions two-five changing every lap in the competitive race. Brandon Waelti and Doug Schenck both made attempts to pass Fiscus on the eight lap with Waelti taking the top position exiting turn four. Buddy
Luebke escaped injury on the 11th lap, when he flipped entering turn one. One lap later Schenck running third stopped on the track causing the caution. During the caution third place Danny Stratton pitted to replace a flat left rear tire, restarting the event in 19th position.
One lap after the restart series points leader Brad Kuhn made brilliant pass running the cushion and went from third place to the lead. Two laps later Scott Hatton moved into second place. Kuhn began lapping slower cars on the 23rd lap.
At the midway point Kuhn led Hatton by four car lengths, on the same lap Hatton slowed with mechanical problems, retiring from the event.
Holding a quarter-lap advantage over the field Kuhn suffered a broken rear axle on the 28th lap, causing him to come to a stop on the track. On the restart Clarke led Waelti and
Fiscus. Stratton meanwhile restarted in seventh position, and within one lap was in fourth place. With Clarke leading, Stratton then took over third place on the 31st lap and moved into the second position three laps later.
With both leaders running the cushion Stratton pulled to Clarke's tail with ten laps remaining. That would be the closest Stratton got to the leader during the final ten laps. Clarke driving the Steve Smith Hawk Engine Development Spike-Hawk finished 0.95 seconds ahead of Stratton for the victory.
Waelti, Davey Ray and Chad DeSelle completed the top five.
Kuhn holds a sizeable 130-point lead over Hatton with two events and a possible 252 points remaining. heading into the Hall of Fame Classic at Angell Park on Aug. 27.
